How often to service an air conditioner
Once a year, ideally in spring before the season when air conditioning is used most intensively. In an apartment in Hodolany where the unit runs daily throughout summer, dust and dirt accumulate faster in the filters and evaporator than in a unit switched on for only a few weeks a year. However, an annual interval remains a reasonable baseline even where air conditioning is used less frequently.
Households with pets or in dustier environments (busy streets, nearby construction) may consider cleaning filters twice a year, customers can clean the filters themselves without tools, while deeper evaporator cleaning requires a technician.
What the service includes
- Cleaning and disinfection of the indoor unit, including the evaporator and drainage system.

How to tell if your air conditioner needs servicing
The most common sign is that the unit cools less effectively than before, even when set to the same temperature as last year. Any of these signs is a good reason to book service before the start of the season, not only when the air conditioner stops working completely in the middle of a heatwave.
It pays to have your air conditioning checked before the first really hot day, not just when it's urgently needed. Service booked calmly in spring can be scheduled for a time that suits both parties, whereas in July emergency situations are more common and waiting times are longer.
What happens when servicing is delayed
A clogged evaporator and filters restrict airflow; the air conditioner works harder to maintain performance and consumes more energy than necessary. A long-neglected unit also spreads an unpleasant odour from moisture and deposits into the room: a typical sign is that the air conditioner "smells" immediately after switching on, with the odour disappearing after a while. This is a clear signal that cleaning is due.
In the worst case, an unresolved condition leads to compressor failure or refrigerant leakage, which is an order of magnitude more expensive to repair than regular servicing. An annual inspection therefore almost always pays for itself compared to waiting until the air conditioning stops working completely.

Many flats in Olomouc have air conditioners that are ten years old or more. If the unit is working and cooling properly, it is usually not worth replacing the entire system just because of its age; regular servicing and topping up the refrigerant as needed are sufficient. Replacement only makes sense when a repair costs about the same as a new unit, or when the unit fails to maintain performance even after servicing.
